The American Automobile Association (AAA) released a Memorial Day forecast report and it predicts that this weekend will be the busiest it’s been in three years. The attorneys with Althauser Rayan Abbarno, LLP share tips for safe travels.

This marks the second highest single-year increase in travelers since 2010, with 2021 being the highest. The report said these volumes are almost in line with pre-pandemic levels.

5 Tips for a Safe Memorial Day Holiday

  1. Avoid alcohol. Alcohol and driving is always a bad mix. Every day, nearly 30 people in the U.S. die in a motor-vehicle crash involving an alcohol-impaired driver.
  2. Keep your tires properly inflated. If Memorial Day weekend means a road trip for you and the gang, make sure your tires are ready to endure the long drive.
  3. Clean your windshield. Make sure your view is clear and your wipers are in good shape. …
  4. Never leave kids unattended. Don’t leave your children in the car, even if you’re just running into the store for sunscreen. …
  5. Stay alert while driving. When you get behind the wheel, stay alert and avoid distracted driving. To stay alert on your trip, get plenty of rest before you leave.

Traffic Volume Charts

For those who are traveling, consulting the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Memorial Day weekend traffic volume charts can help determine best times to travel on key routes, including times to avoid if possible. The Interstate 5 Canadian border forecast is not included in these charts because testing/vaccination requirements and the length of time the border has been open doesn’t allow for reliable forecasts at this point. Travelers should also check ahead for any COVID-19 safety requirements at their destinations or stops along the way.
