💰 What Reimbursements Can Injured Workers Receive Under Washington State L&I?

If you’ve been hurt on the job in Washington, you may be entitled to more than just medical and wage-loss benefits. The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) provides several reimbursements to help injured workers recover and return to work without financial hardship.

At Althauser Rayan Abbarno, our experienced workers’ compensation attorneys help clients understand and maximize their benefits — including reimbursement for travel, medical expenses, and other costs related to your injury claim.

🚗 Travel Expense Reimbursement

You may need to travel for doctor appointments, therapy, or independent medical exams. L&I may reimburse you for mileage, tolls, and parking fees, but certain rules apply.

You may see any health care provider listed in the L&I online directory, but travel expenses will only be reimbursed if:

Reimbursement is preauthorized by your claim manager.
✅ The provider is more than 15 miles one way (30 miles round trip) from your home.
✅ There are no qualified providers within 15 miles of your home that could treat your condition.
✅ You submit a completed Travel Reimbursement Request (F245-145-000), including copies of all expense receipts.

You may also be reimbursed for:

  • 🅿️ Parking over $10
  • 🚧 Bridge and road tolls
  • Mileage for round trips to approved appointments
  • 🚌 Public transportation costs, if applicable

🏥 Medical Expense Reimbursements

In addition to travel, injured workers may qualify for reimbursement of certain medical-related expenses that are necessary for treatment or recovery. This can include:

  • Prescribed medical equipment or supplies
  • Over-the-counter medications recommended by your provider
  • Home modifications or assistive devices (if approved by L&I)
  • Transportation to medical facilities if you are unable to drive

💡 Tip: Always keep detailed receipts and mileage logs — these documents are essential for your reimbursement claim.

💼 Wage and Time-Loss Compensation

If your workplace injury prevents you from working, you may also be eligible for time-loss compensation — partial wage replacement while you recover. The amount is based on your gross monthly wage at the time of injury, including overtime, bonuses, and other benefits.

🧾 How to Request Reimbursement

  1. Download and complete the Travel Reimbursement Request Form (F245-145-000).
  2. Attach all receipts and documentation.
  3. Submit the form to your L&I claim manager for approval.
