On June 6, 2024, a new law went into effect in the State of Washington that eliminates the statute of limitation to bring a claim for recovery of damages for injury suffered as a result of childhood sexual abuse when the act of childhood sexual abuse occurs on or after June 6, 2024.

Prior to the law going into effect, for childhood sexual abuse, the statute of limitations for civil actions for damages is the
later of three dates: three years from the commission of the act alleged to have caused the injury or condition; three years from the time the victim discovered or reasonably should have discovered that the injury or the condition was caused by the act; or three years from the time that the victim discovered that the act caused the injury for which the claim is brought

Previous attempts to pass the law (retroactively and prospectively) had repeatedly failed in the State House. An amendment from State Rep. Peter Abbarno (R-Centralia) to eliminate the statute of limitation prospectively beginning June 2024 passed, along with HB 1618.
